US says airstrike in Somalia kills 13 members of al-Shabaab terrorist group

(CNN)US Africa Command said in a statement last weekend's US airstrikes in Somalia killed members of the al-Shabaab terror group. 13 people were killed.

The United States launched an attack on Sunday to aid Somali forces under attack near Tidan, Somalia. No civilians were injured or killed in the strike, according to initial assessments.

Last week, the United States conducted three of his airstrikes against al-Shabaab, just west of where the weekend's attacks took place. Four al-Shabaab members were killed in these attacks, according to a statement by Africa Command.

In May, President Joe Biden decided to redeploy US troops to Somalia to support the government and counter al-Shabaab. The move reversed former President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw all US troops from the country.

At the time, senior government officials said "less than 500" troops were being repatriated to the country, but declined to provide an exact number. He stressed that he would never fully recover the approximately 750 military personnel who were in Somalia before Trump's withdrawal. The African Command said five members of the terrorist group were killed in June.
