Woman Crush Wednesday: Bella Ramsey Soars in ‘Catherine Called Birdy’

Happy October everyone! Today is the first Woman Crush Wednesday of this new month, and, in the spirit of Halloween, you’re definitely in for a treat (no tricks here). This week, we’re celebrating a scary good actress who has managed to make a major mark on the entertainment industry over the past six years, accumulating a slew of unforgettable credits and leading roles, and all by the age of 19. Your WCW has been putting in the work and shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon, so without further ado, let’s give it up for her, the remarkable Bella Ramsey!

WHO’S THAT GAL: Bella Ramsey

WHY WE’RE CRUSHING: Ramsey stars as the titular Birdy in Amazon Prime Video Original title Catherine Called Birdy, which premieres on the platform this Friday, on October 7. This medieval comedy begins in the year 1290 at the English village of Stonebridge, where Lady Catherine, AKA Birdy (Ramsey), is the youngest child of Lord Rollo (Andrew Scott) and Lady Aislinn (Billie Piper). With both Birdy’s family and her home of Stonebridge Manor having seen better days,  her greedy father decides to marry his only daughter off to a wealthy man in order to gain the necessary wealth and land to escape destitution and social ruin.

But spunky Birdy won’t allow her independence to be sold off for any price, and therefore makes it her mission to use her imagination, stubbornness, and adventurous spirit to put off any potential suitors her father throws her way. In addition to Ramsey, Scott, and Piper, the film features an all-star cast in Joe Alwyn, Dean-Charles Chapman, Ralph Ineson, Archie Renaux, Isis Hainsworth, Mimi M. Khayisa, and Russell Brand, so be sure to catch all of their awesome work in Catherine Called Birdy as soon as it drops this week, only on Amazon Prime Video.

WHERE YOU’VE SEEN HER BEFORE: Ramsey’s professional onscreen career began with a bang in 2016 when she first portrayed Lyanna Mormont in hit HBO drama series Game of Thrones, on which she continued to act until the show’s end in 2019. From there, the actress hit the ground running, working on other TV shows like Future-Worm!, RequiemHis Dark MaterialsSummer Camp Island, as well as on feature films like 2018 drama Two for Joy, 2018 mystery-comedy Holmes & Watson, 2019 animated fantasy Princess Emmy, and 2020 biographical drama Resistance.

Besides her work as Lyanna Mormont on Game of Thrones, Ramsey is perhaps best known for her main roles as Mildred Hubble in children’s fantasy drama series The Worst Witch, the titular role in animated supernatural adventure series Hilda, Jane Grey in drama series Becoming Elizabeth, and Lorna Luft in 2019 biographical drama film Judy. With all of this impressive work under her belt in just six years and even more exciting projects to come, we have no doubt that Ramsey has a long and successful acting career ahead, and we can’t wait to see what she pursues and creates in the years to come.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE HER AGAIN: Luckily you won’t to have to wait much longer to see more from Ramsey, as she already has three projects currently confirmed to be in the works or coming out soon. Most immediately, you can see her star as Georgia in fantasy short film Villain, in which she plays an orphan seeking revenge on the creature that destroyed her home. And then next year, you can look forward catching Ramsey voice Molly in animated adventure-comedy film Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget as well as seeing her star as Ellie Williams in HBO’s highly-anticipated post-apocalyptic drama series The Last of Us.
