Benedict XVI Dies. Pope Francis Will Preside over the Funeral in Saint Peter’s Square

(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 31.12.2022).- Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI died at 9:34 am on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at the age of 95, after four days of convalescence. 

Benedict XVI received the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick on Wednesday afternoon, December 28, at the end of the Mass which he attended in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery. He was accompanied by the Papal Family. 

The Holy See’s Press Office confirmed that the Pope Emeritus’ funeral will be on Thursday, January 5, at 9:30 am, in Saint Peter’s Square. Pope Francis will preside over the Mass.

Benedict XVI’s body is will be exposed in the Vatican Basilica beginning Monday, January 2. “In keeping with the Pope Emeritus’ wish, the funeral will be carried out in the name of simplicity,” said the spokesman of the Holy See, in a press conference at midday on December 31.
