Pope at Angelus: Live & Act Well on This Earth, But Having Longing for Heaven

We must live and act on this earth having a longing for Heaven in our hearts…

This second Sunday of August, Pope Francis gave this concrete encouragement to those gathered in St. Peter’s Square for his traditional Sunday Angelus at noon, as he reflected on today’s Gospel according to St. Luke.

Recalling the Gospel passage of the servants who vigilantly wait for their master, the Pontiff highlighted that this attitude of vigilant and faithful servants is what we are to imitate.

“Be ready for the final and definitive meeting with the Lord,” Pope Francis exhorted.

Each of us, he reminded, will meet Him, finding him or herself with the Lord, on that day. “Each of us has his or her own date of the definitive meeting. The Lord says: ‘Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant upon his arrival.”

The Lord reminds us, the Holy Father underscored, that life is a journey towards eternity. “Therefore,” he said, “we are called to make all our talents bear fruit, without ever forgetting that “.'”

“In this perspective,” he said, “every moment becomes precious, so it is necessary to live and act on this earth having a longing for heaven: feet on earth, walking on earth, working on earth, doing good on earth, with the longing for heaven.”

Pope Francis concluded, as usual, wishing those gathered a happy Sunday and good lunch.
