(ZENIT News / Vatican City, 20.10.2022).- Three mummies housed in the Ethnological Museum of the Vatican Museums were returned to Peru after being in the Pope’s Museum for almost a century.

According to L’Osservatore Romano, the Holy See’s official newspaper, “[t]he gesture responds to the spirit of integration between cultures on which the Museum is founded, as requested by Pius XI in 1925 after the great success of the Universal Missionary Exhibition in the Vatican that year.”

At the time, some one hundred thousand works from different latitudes of the orb were sent as gifts to the Pope. It was in that context that the mummies arrived from Peru.

Present at the act of repatriation were the President of the Governorate of Vatican City State, Cardinal Fernando Vérgez, LC, and the Peruvian Chancellor César Rodrigo Landa Arroyo.
