17 ‘stolen’ Apple iPhones recovered from a Malawian

A total of 17 suspected stolen Apple iPhones were recovered from a suspect in the Johannesburg CBD this week.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the single male suspect was arrested by Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) IIOC Undercover officers in possession of suspected stolen property at Commissioner Street in the Johannesburg CBD.

“On Tuesday, 04 October 2022, officers received information about a male residing at a building on Commissioner Street believed to be selling stolen cellphones,” he said.

He added that officers proceeded to the location given and monitored the area for hours to see if they could spot the male and observe his movements.

“Officers found and apprehended the male. He was questioned, and he led the officers to his flat where they carried out a search and recovered 17 Apple iPhone cell phones and 2 laptops.”

JMPD REQUESTS PROOF OF PURCHASE FROM THE MALAWIAN

The JMPD spokesperson said the male was requested to produce evidence proving that the items recovered belonged to him, but failed to do so or furnish any corroborating information.

“The male suspect, a Malawian national, was placed under arrest and detained at Johannesburg Central SAPS. The cell phones, laptops and a sum of R640 were booked in at the police station as evidence,” Fihla explained.

The suspect is likely to make a court appearance during the course of this week.

Meanwhile, pupils are risk-free in Pietermaritzburg following the arrest of a suspect who robbed six of learners of their cellphones en route to school.
The suspect was arrested by Mi7 National Group after they were flagged down about the latest incident on the morning of Wednesday, 17 August. He was apprehended while attempting to flee a reaction officer.
