Eastern Cape pupil KILLED ‘in full view of educators and learners’

The Eastern Cape Department of Education has confirmed that a Grade 8 pupil has died after being involved in “faction fights” with other boys. The learner, who attended Arthur Mfebe High School in Cofimvaba, was reportedly killed by another pupil.

The incident is said to have occurred on Tuesday.

“The deceased learner from Oathay Rural Settlement was killed by other learners in full view of educators and learners, especially learners from St. Marks which is the main feeder primary school and some members of the community,” said department spokesperson Mali Mtima in a statement on Wednesday, 17 August 2022.

The department says all relevant stakeholders had to convene an emergency meeting, in the wake of the tragedy. These included the Chris Hani West education district’s top management, SAPS District Commissioner, Intsikayethu Acting Mayor and Chief Zwelabantu Matanzima of the Abathembu Kingdom Royal Council.

MEC TO VISIT SLAIN EASTERN CAPE PUPIL’S FAMILY

The Eastern Cape’s Education MEC, Fundile Gade has condemned the alleged “factionalism” which resulted in the Grade 8 pupil being killed and is expected to visit his family on Thursday, 18 August 2022, together with other stakeholders.

Meanwhile, classes had to be suspended at the school following the incident.

“Due to the volatile situation at the school, the meeting unanimously agreed that normal schooling in the prevailing circumstances is untenable, hence the decision to suspend classes. A meeting to map the way forward is scheduled for next week Monday, 22 August 2022 at 08:00 at the school with parents and stakeholders”
