How much attention should SA Inc really pay to the ruling party’s plans?

If the Azanian People’s Organisation (bless its cotton socks) held a press conference today and announced a programme of land expropriation without compensation, no-one in Ga-Modjadji or Sandton would bat an eyelid. That’s because Azapo, once an influential political force in SA, has no chance of getting its hands on the levers of power any time soon. 

Despite its deep problems, the ANC will without doubt be part of SA’s power configuration after the 2024 national election — and the one after that. The ANC might win the election outright in 2024, or it might be forced into a coalition if it falls below 50% of total votes cast. If the latter happens it may have to dilute its policy positions, or harden some of these if it jumps into bed with an entity such as the EFF...
