WATCH: Driver mows down pedestrian in Verulam CBD

CCTV footage of a driver who ran over and injured an elderly pedestrian on Ireland Street in Verulam CBD in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday afternoon has emerged. 

The driver of the white Toyota Yaris who reportedly lost control of the vehicle during an alleged fight with his partner was reportedly arrested.

According to private security, Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) its members were called out to a business premise at approximately 15:28 to provide medical assistance to the injured pedestrian. 

Spokesperson Prem Balram said on arrival, the 44-year-old woman was located on the driveway of a spares shop. 

CCTV footage showed the Toyota Yaris travelling up Ireland Street when it suddenly veered into the opposite lane and struck the pedestrian who was walking on the pavement.

Balram said the driver informed Reaction Officers that he was involved in a heated argument which turned physical with his partner when she grabbed the steering wheel. 

“The vehicle veered across the road and struck the pedestrian before it crashed into a fence. The driver was under the influence of alcohol. He was placed under arrest. 

“The injured pedestrian was stabilised on scene before being transported to hospital by ambulance.”

In a separate incident horrendous scenes were witnessed in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga on Friday, 24 September – after a runaway truck careered through the town centre and claimed ‘at least two lives’. The trail of destruction is thought to be 4km long, according to local media.

The incident took place at 12:45 on 23 September. CCTV footage has captured the moment this out-of-control lorry ploughed through Voortrekker Street, smashing into cars and destroying traffic signs in the process. Sadly, fatalities have been reported at the scene.
