Ryan Routh, 58, faces grave accusations of attempting to assassinate a major political candidate, a charge that could result in life imprisonment. This development follows an event on September 15, 2024, at Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Initially facing two federal gun charges, Routh now confronts additional allegations of assaulting a federal officer and possessing a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime.
Garland emphasized the Department of Justice's commitment to holding Routh accountable, stating:
"Violence and threats of violence targeting public officials are dangerous to the individuals and their families, and to the safety of those who protect them. They are dangerous to everything this country stands for."
The incident at Trump's golf course involved a Secret Service agent, part of Trump's security detail, spotting Routh in nearby brush and opening fire upon seeing a rifle. Authorities report that Routh did not discharge his weapon during the encounter.
This event marks the second alleged assassination attempt against Trump in recent months. On July 13, 2024, a gunman opened fire during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, resulting in Trump being wounded. Garland described both incidents as "abhorrent."
