French authorities investigate ransomware attack on Grand Palais, hosting Olympic events. Computer system breach affects 40 affiliated museums, with attackers demanding ransom for financial data.

French cybercrime authorities have launched an investigation into a ransomware attack targeting the Grand Palais in Paris, a venue for Olympic fencing and Taekwondo events. The incident, occurring approximately one year ago, affected the central computer system of this iconic structure, known for its expansive glass dome - the largest in Europe when constructed.

Despite the breach, Olympic competitions proceeded without disruption at the 77,000-square-meter exhibition hall, which has been a prominent feature of the Parisian landscape since its construction for the 1900 Exposition Universelle. The Grand Palais, located on the Champs-Élysées in the 8th arrondissement, has a rich history, including serving as a military hospital during World War I and a Nazi truck depot in World War II.

The cyberattack potentially compromised data from 40 predominantly small museums affiliated with the Grand Palais. This cultural institution, managed by Réunion des Musées Nationaux, has been a historic monument since 2000 and underwent extensive renovations from 1993 to 2007.

According to reports, the cybercriminals demanded ransom payment within a 48-hour timeframe, threatening to publish obtained financial information online if their demands were not met. The exact sum requested remains undisclosed.

"The incident has not caused any disruption to Olympic events taking place in the iconic glass-roofed exhibition hall in the centre of the French capital."

Statement from French authorities

The Grand Palais, featuring 9,000 square meters of glass in its roof and utilizing 8,500 tons of steel in its construction, has been a versatile venue hosting various events beyond sports. It has been the site of Chanel fashion shows since 2005 and houses the Palais de la Découverte, a science museum. The building's prominence has led to its appearance in several films, including "The Da Vinci Code."

As the investigation continues, authorities are working to secure the affected systems and prevent any potential data leaks. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in cybersecurity, even for historically significant and culturally important institutions.
