Federal authorities are poised to take legal action against Iran for an alleged cyber attack on Donald Trump's presidential campaign. The FBI's investigation has centered on an online entity known as "Robert," who approached American journalists with fabricated information.
According to sources familiar with the ongoing investigation, "Robert" shared campaign documents falsely claiming to have obtained them while working with the campaign. Investigators have determined that this persona was acting on behalf of the Iranian government, offering data files stolen from Trump advisers' email accounts.
The cyber attack targeted several high-ranking officials in Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, including senior adviser Susie Wiles. Other members of Trump's inner circle were also compromised in the breach.
U.S. intelligence agencies concluded in August 2024 that Iran was responsible for recent hacking attempts on both the Trump and Biden-Harris presidential campaigns. The FBI and Justice Department now believe they have sufficient evidence to file criminal charges, which could occur within days.
The Iranian hackers employed sophisticated phishing techniques, sending emails designed to appear legitimate but capable of granting unauthorized access to recipients' communications. This tactic is part of a broader strategy by Iran to influence the U.S. election process, which they consider consequential to their interests.
"The [intelligence community] is confident that the Iranians have through social engineering and other efforts sought access to individuals with direct access to the Presidential campaigns of both political parties. Such activity, including thefts and disclosures, are intended to influence the U.S. election process."
These tactics are not new, as U.S. intelligence officials noted in July 2024 that Iran's efforts to stoke societal discord and undermine Trump's bid for the White House mirror their actions in 2020. Russia has also been implicated in similar cyberattacks.
The FBI initiated its investigation into suspected Iranian hacking targeting U.S. presidential campaigns in June 2024. Agents collaborated with Google and Microsoft to examine what appeared to be a phishing effort aimed at individuals associated with the campaigns.
One notable victim of the attack was Roger Stone, a longtime informal adviser to Trump. Hackers successfully took control of Stone's email account and used it to send spear-phishing links to others. Stone has acknowledged being contacted by the FBI regarding the breach.
