Director Paul Feig's latest project, "Jackpot," draws inspiration from the legendary Jackie Chan's comedic action style. The film, set to premiere in U.S. theaters on August 17, 2024, features Awkwafina and John Cena in a dystopian Los Angeles where lottery winners face lethal consequences.
Feig, known for creating the cult classic TV series "Freaks and Geeks" and directing hit comedies like "Bridesmaids" (2011), describes "Jackpot" as a tribute to Chan's signature style. He explains, "Chan's characters are always classically somebody who didn't want to be in the situation, in over their head, trying to get out of it, not being aggressive, just trying to fight their way out of something."
The film's premise revolves around a "Grand Lottery" where winners can be legally murdered before sundown by those seeking to claim the multibillion-dollar prize. This concept echoes dystopian narratives like "The Hunger Games," set against the backdrop of Los Angeles, often dubbed the "Entertainment Capital of the World."
John Cena, a 16-time world champion in WWE, brings his wrestling expertise to the big screen. "I'm not taking anything away from our stunt team or my tremendously talented double, Spencer Thomas, but the action in 'Jackpot' was a lot of the skills that I can offer a coordinator," Cena explains. His ability to perform many of his own stunts aligns with Jackie Chan's renowned approach to action filmmaking.
Awkwafina, whose real name is Nora Lum, stars alongside Cena. The Golden Globe-winning actress, known for her roles in "Crazy Rich Asians" and "The Farewell," found working with Cena to be a positive experience. "I loved working with John Cena. He's really one of the most professional guys I've ever worked with," she shares.
Despite not having time to build rapport before filming, both actors developed a strong working relationship during production. This on-set chemistry promises to translate into an engaging on-screen dynamic.
"Jackpot" marks another notable entry in Feig's diverse filmography, which includes collaborations with actress Melissa McCarthy. The director's ability to blend comedy with action, coupled with the star power of Cena and Awkwafina, sets high expectations for this unique take on the action-comedy genre.
"This one was throwing big haymakers and tossing people around, and a lot of the stuff I do on WWE as well as a lot of stunt driving, which I love driving, too."
