The University of Guyana is set to graduate close to 3500 persons next month in the largest convocation ceremony in the institution’s 60-year history.
The University said this year’s convocation ceremonies are extremely special as it proudly celebrates its sixtieth anniversary under the theme: “Consistently We Rise, Changing the World in Infinite Ways”.
Students from several new academic programmes will be graduating, including Bachelor of Science (Food Science) in the Faculty of Natural Sciences; Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology; the Master’s in Communication from the Faculty of Social Sciences; Master’s of Education in Early Childhood Development from the Faculty of Education and Humanities; and the Master’s in Strategic Development from the Institute for Human Resilience, Strategic Security, and the Future.

UG shared in a statement on Tuesday, “The University’s role and place as a major development partner and its achievements are highly recognised and honoured locally, regionally and internationally. The University of Guyana has produced upwards of 50,000 graduates in its 60-year existence – many of whom have gone on to serve at the highest levels in both the private and public sectors nationally and internationally.”
UG offers over 160 programmes in over 60 disciplines in online, face-to-face and blended formats. It delivers in a Guyana-based system across eight campuses. It is the largest, oldest, most advanced and only state University in Guyana with a student population of over 10,000.
“The mission of the University is to discover, generate, disseminate and apply knowledge of the highest standard for the service of the community, the nation, and all mankind within an atmosphere of academic freedom, innovation and universal respect… UG’s forward-thinking Blueprint 2040 is currently setting the course for the University’s future design and institutional response to the changing needs of Guyana, the region and the world,” the institution added.
The graduation has been scheduled for November 9 to 18, 2023. Six ceremonies, two each day, for graduands of the Turkeyen Campus will be held at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) in Georgetown. The ceremony for the UGBC graduands will be held on the University Lawns, Berbice Campus, Tain Settlement.
The Government is working to provide free education at the University of Guyana during its first term in office. This is being supported with the current Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) in which thousands of persons are pursuing higher education through reputable universities around the world at zero cost.
