In a major shift of military strategy Israel Katz announced plans to target Syrian weapon stockpiles: the focus is on heavy arms including surface-to-air systems cruise missiles and coastal defense equipment
The decision comes after significant changes in Syriaʼs power structure (with Assadʼs removal) which created new risks about advanced weapons falling into wrong hands. Gideon Saar emphasized that Israel dont want to meddle in Syrian affairs but needs to protect its citizens interests

Following the Hamas attack about a year ago Israel stepped-up its border security measures. The military has been busy with:
- Clearing land-mines near Syrian border
- Building new defensive barriers
- Setting-up observation posts
- Deploying commandos to Mount Hermon area
Israeli forces moved into the de-militarized zone — a 400 sq-km buffer created back in 74 by UN agreement. Saar explained that troops stay within 1-2 miles from border; its temporary and limited step taken for security reasons
