A fresh DOJ report (released on 12/5/24) shows big problems in Memphis police work. The probe started about 1.5 years ago after Tyre Nichols death‚ which made people very mad
The report points to many issues: cops make wrong stops‚ search people without good reason and treat Black folks differently. They also dont handle mental-health cases well‚ and kids have scary run-ins with officers (which shouldnt happen at all)
Memphis City lawyer Tannera Gibson thinks its all too quick — most checks like this need 2-3 years but this one took way less time; she wrote to DOJ that city needs more time to look at everything. The city hall plans to talk about it tomorrow: they dont want to rush into fixing things
Legal stuff is still going on from the Nichols case: three ex-cops got in trouble for witness problems this fall but dodged worse charges. Two more already said they did wrong things. Next spring some of them have to go to state court for murder charges
The DOJʼs Kristen Clarke says Memphis needs better police work: “Memphis folks should feel safe and trust their cops.“ DOJ wants to hear what people think about fixing these problems — theyʼll ask around town to get ideas
