With the presidential vote just around the corner Eric Adams the NYC mayor whose dealing with federal corruption charges is taking an un-expected approach to Trump-related questions
During an oct-30 press meeting Adams avoided answering more than 10 questions about the ex-presidents policies (including a large-scale deportation plan) and didnt comment on Trumps statements about the Central Park Five case. “Im not entertaining any hypotheticals“ he stated
The mayor – whos been charged with federal crimes last month showed frustration with his own party: “Its insulting to ask if someones a fascist or Hitler; we need to focus on real issues that affect new-yorkers everyday“
Adams legal situation adds an interesting twist to his behavior; since Trump might have power to stop the case or give pardon if he wins. When asked about voting plans the mayor made un-clear references to past support without naming names
Local politicians reacted strongly to Adams stance:
- Zohran Mamdani a mayoral candidate called it betrayal of city values
- Public Advocate Jumaane Williams named the mayors behavior disgraceful
- Other democratic leaders expressed strong dis-approval
Trump showed support for Adams during his madison square garden event saying “Mayor Adams has been treated very badly; hes been really great.“ The mayor later only noted that some rally speeches were in-appropriate but refused to criticize any of Trumps statements
