A tragic roof-fall at Novi Sad railway hub (located bout 40-miles from Belgrade) turned deadly on 11/01‚ causing 14 deaths and leaving three people with life-threatening injuries
Hundreds of upset citizens gathered in Belgrade on sunday to voice their anger about the incident: Some carried signs pointing to poor-maintenance and state mismanagement. The crowd moved through the city-center shouting demands for Aleksandar Vucicʼs arrest
The state is directly responsible for this
The station which underwent repairs in 21-22 (with final touch-ups done last summer) became a focus of criminal probe. Prime Minister Milos Vucevic mentioned that both police and prosecution are looking into possible wrongdoing; however he didnt specify any details
Local prosecutors office has already talked to 26 people including Transportation Minister Goran Vesic. They got important papers and plan to question 14 more individuals. The investigation targets both: criminal and political responsibilities in this case
The opposition groups blame the incident on:
- Government corruption
- Ties with crime groups
- Family-based hiring
- Too much paperwork
While Vucic and his Progressive Party supporters deny these claims their opponents keep pushing for more accountability in public infrastructure projects
