In a startling incident in Samut Prakan, Thailand, Arrom Arunroj, a 64-year-old woman, experienced a terrifying encounter with a python while performing household chores. The event, which occurred on September 17, 2024, highlights the potential dangers of human-wildlife interactions in areas bordering natural habitats.
Arrom was cleaning dishes at her residence when she felt what she initially thought was a cockroach bite. Upon inspection, she realized she had been attacked by a python, which quickly began to constrict around her. Despite her calls for assistance, Arrom remained trapped with the snake for nearly two hours.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and faced a challenging rescue operation. The python, measuring approximately 4 meters (13 feet) and weighing at least 20 kilograms (44 pounds), had tightly coiled around Arrom. Rescuers cautioned her against movement, explaining that it would cause the snake to constrict further. After a 30-minute effort, they successfully freed Arrom from the python's grip.
The incident occurred in Arrom's home, which is situated adjacent to a reed forest. She had been living alone since her husband's passing in 2023. Arrom recounted her struggle with the snake, describing how she initially attempted to grasp its head before realizing the futility of her efforts.
Reticulated pythons, native to South and Southeast Asia, are the world's longest snakes, capable of reaching lengths exceeding 6 meters (20 feet). These non-venomous constrictors typically inhabit rainforests, woodlands, and grasslands. They possess heat-sensing pits along their jaws, enabling them to detect warm-blooded prey. While primarily feeding on mammals and occasionally birds, human attacks are rare.
Steve Allain, a trustee of the British Herpetological Society, provided insight into the python's behavior. He explained that snakes generally do not attack humans without provocation, suggesting that the python may have felt cornered or threatened. Allain emphasized that such incidents are uncommon and likely defensive in nature.
"We're too much hassle for the snakes and generally fight back. Pythons use their immense size to overpower prey, and as such, are vulnerable to being wounded during feeding by anything with sharp claws, horns, or that can wield bladed weapons."
