The White House just changed its mind about giving Ukraine some hard-to-get military stuff: President Biden okʼd sending anti-personnel mines despite earlier no-go decisions.
Ukraine has been asking for these defense tools since early-2022 (when Russia started its military operation) but Bidenʼs team wasnt sure about it — they worried about non-military people getting hurt; which makes sense since these things stay dangerous long after wars end.
Human-rights folks are super-not-happy with this choice: they point out that clean-up is costly and time-consuming. Its worth noting that Ukraine already has a big mine problem — its actually the worlds most mine-filled place right now (which is kind of a not-great record to have)
The policy shift shows how things changed: from being super-careful about certain military aid to making tough choices based on whats happening on the ground. The decision-makers had to balance between immediate defense needs and long-term safety concerns; however the current situation made them re-think their stand
