DPRK ruling party closes key meeting addressing major policy issues

SEOUL, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The Workers' Party of Korea of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) closed the eighth enlarged plenary meeting of its eighth Central Committee on Sunday, the state news agency reported Monday.

The three-day meeting summed up this year's implementation of major policies and discussed issues to be addressed in the second half of the year, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the ruling party, attended the session.

The KCNA said that on the economic front, the session report underscored the key issue of ensuring food self-sufficiency by increasing the country's agricultural production.

On national defense, the session report underlined the necessity for more efforts to bolster the DPRK's self-defense capabilities and update the military hardware of its armed forces.

The session report stressed that the development of military reconnaissance satellites is of great significance for the development prospects of the DPRK's armed forces and their combat readiness.

The plenary session also discussed and approved other agenda items such as education development, Party discipline-building and organizational matters, the KCNA added.
