Balloon Artists Unite for Ailing Colleague at Democratic Convention

In a heartwarming display of solidarity, the balloon industry united to support one of their own at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. The event's grand finale, featuring 100,000 red, white, and blue balloons cascading from the United Center's ceiling, was more than just a political celebration. It was a tribute to Tommy DeLorenzo, a Chicago-based balloon artist fighting a critical battle against cancer.

DeLorenzo, 38, was diagnosed with Stage 4 diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2022. As the convention unfolded, he was undergoing a stem cell transplant at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, with his sister serving as the donor. This treatment represents a common approach for certain types of lymphoma, offering hope in advanced cases.

The balloon community's response to DeLorenzo's situation was swift and touching. A team of 55 artists from 18 U.S. states and Canada volunteered their time and expertise to create the convention's balloon display. This gesture highlighted the close-knit nature of the balloon industry, estimated to be worth over $100 million globally.

"Words cannot express the gratitude I feel for this community. This experience solidifies what I already knew: I work in one of the best industries with some of the most intelligent and loving people anyone could find."

The volunteers worked tirelessly on August 15 and 16, inflating and tying thousands of biodegradable latex balloons. Each artist handled approximately 2,000 balloons, showcasing the efficiency and skill typical in their profession. This event also marked a significant moment in the history of political conventions, as balloon drops have been a tradition since 1932.

The use of biodegradable materials for the balloons reflects a growing awareness of environmental concerns within the industry. This shift comes as several states have banned balloon releases due to their potential harm to wildlife and ecosystems.

Treb Heining, a veteran balloon artist who has organized drops for 14 conventions, spearheaded this initiative. His decision to dedicate the event to DeLorenzo speaks volumes about the personal connections within this artistic community.

The balloon display not only honored DeLorenzo but also served as a vibrant backdrop for the convention held at the United Center, the largest arena in the United States. As the balloons fell, they created a patriotic sea of red, white, and blue, colors deeply associated with American political traditions.

While undergoing treatment, DeLorenzo and his husband, Scott, watched the balloon drop from the hospital. The event was a powerful reminder of the support they've received, including financial assistance through a GoFundMe campaign that has raised nearly $35,000 for medical expenses.

This touching story transcends politics, demonstrating how a community can come together to support one of their own during challenging times. It serves as a poignant reminder of the human element behind grand political spectacles and the enduring power of solidarity in the face of adversity.
