Brazilian Police Crack Down on Massive Illegal Gold Mining Operation in Amazon

On September 11, 2023, Brazilian law enforcement agencies executed a comprehensive operation targeting illicit gold mining activities in the Amazon rainforest. The operation focused on dismantling a criminal network responsible for the production and distribution of approximately 3.1 tonnes of gold obtained through unauthorized means.

The Brazilian Federal Police, tasked with investigating crimes against Indigenous populations, conducted raids primarily in the southern region of Para state. This area, which is part of the 5.5 million square kilometer Amazon rainforest, has experienced a significant increase in unlawful gold extraction activities in recent years, often encroaching on protected Indigenous territories.

According to official statements, the criminal organization employed fraudulent documentation to conceal the origins of the illegally mined gold. The laundering process involved transporting the gold to Sao Jose do Rio Preto, a city in northern Sao Paulo state renowned for its jewelry industry. Here, the illicit gold was combined with legally sourced metal, making it challenging to distinguish its origins.

Alexandre Manoel Goncalves, the federal police officer leading the operation, stated:

"We have to establish whether the gold was illegal and came from unauthorized mining."

The scale of the operation was substantial, with authorities issuing numerous search and seizure warrants. The judiciary ordered the confiscation and freezing of assets valued at approximately 2.9 billion reais ($514 million), including vehicles, motorcycles, jewelry, and gold nuggets.

As part of the crackdown, four companies faced suspension, while six mining licenses and four firearm possession permits were revoked. Additionally, four local government officials were removed from their positions due to their alleged involvement in the illegal activities.

It's worth noting that Brazil ranks among the world's largest gold producers, with Para state being the second-largest in the country by area. The state is home to parts of the Carajás National Forest, which contains one of the planet's largest iron ore mines.

The issue of illegal gold mining in the Amazon is complex and long-standing. It significantly contributes to deforestation and often involves the use of mercury, which poses severe environmental risks. The value of illegally mined gold from the Amazon is estimated to be in the billions of dollars annually, with many operations utilizing advanced technology such as dredges and excavators.

This recent operation is part of ongoing efforts by the Brazilian government to combat illegal mining activities in the Amazon. Such activities not only threaten the environment but also frequently lead to conflicts with Indigenous communities, whose reservations cover approximately 13% of Brazil's land area.
