China Approves Westinghouse to Supply Four Nuclear Reactors for Power Projects
Westinghouse secures approval for four AP1000 reactors in China, boosting its presence in the country's growing nuclear sector. The decision aligns with China's commitment to clean energy expansion.
Westinghouse Electric Company has received approval from the Chinese government to provide four nuclear reactors for two separate power projects in the country. This development marks a significant expansion of the company's presence in China's burgeoning nuclear energy sector.
The Chinese State Council has authorized the construction of two AP1000 reactors for the Bailong nuclear power project in Guangxi province. This project is owned by the State Power Investment Corp (SPIC), one of China's largest state-owned electricity producers. Simultaneously, approval was granted for two additional AP1000 reactors at the Lufeng Nuclear Power Plant in Guangdong province, operated by China General Nuclear Power Corp (CGN).
China's nuclear power industry has experienced substantial growth, supported by consistent government backing and strategies promoting localization. This approach has contributed to the country's advancements in various sectors, including renewable energy and electric vehicle production. Westinghouse, jointly owned by uranium producer Cameco and Brookfield Renewable Partners, stated that this recent approval brings the total number of operational and approved AP1000 reactors in China to 16.
The AP1000 reactor design, developed by Westinghouse, incorporates passive safety systems capable of operating without AC power for 72 hours. This technology has already been implemented at the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant in Georgia, USA, with units coming online in 2023 and 2024.
China's commitment to nuclear energy aligns with its goal to derive 20% of its energy from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030. The country currently possesses the world's third-largest nuclear power fleet, trailing only the United States and France. Experts project that China's nuclear power capacity may surpass that of France by the end of this decade.
"The approval of these projects demonstrates our commitment to clean energy and technological advancement in the nuclear sector."
The expansion of nuclear power in China is particularly noteworthy in Guangdong province, the country's most populous region with over 126 million inhabitants. This growth in nuclear capacity is crucial for meeting the increasing energy demands of the area while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
It's worth noting that China's journey in nuclear power began relatively recently, with its first nuclear power plant, Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant, commencing operations in 1991. The rapid development since then underscores the country's dedication to diversifying its energy portfolio and reducing carbon emissions.
As China continues to invest in nuclear technology, the collaboration with international firms like Westinghouse plays a vital role in knowledge transfer and technological advancement. This partnership not only benefits China's energy sector but also contributes to the global expansion of nuclear power as a clean energy solution.
