D.C. Tudor Home Blends Historic Charm with Modern Luxury After Renovation

In Washington, D.C.'s prestigious Wesley Heights neighborhood, a 1935 Tudor-style residence has undergone a remarkable transformation, blending historic charm with contemporary luxury. The property, located at 3001 Foxhall Rd. NW, was purchased by Altaf Lakhani approximately three years ago, drawn by its "beautiful Tudor charm" and prime location.

The house, originally built during the height of Tudor Revival popularity in the United States, has been meticulously renovated to meet modern standards while preserving its architectural heritage. Michael Greigg of 3G Architects led the redesign, which began in 2022 and was completed in February 2024, just six months ago.

The renovation doubled the living space, expanding it to over 9,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor areas. The project maintained the Tudor facade to harmonize with neighboring properties, while introducing a modern addition at the rear. Original elements such as stonework, fireplaces, and a slate roof were preserved, showcasing the home's historical significance.

Interior upgrades include a chef's kitchen equipped with high-end Miele appliances, multiple skylights to enhance natural lighting and energy efficiency, and balconies offering scenic views. The primary bedroom suite now features a balcony, two walk-in closets, a fireplace, and a luxurious bathroom with a soaking tub.

The property boasts six bedrooms and eight bathrooms, spread across four levels. Notable additions include a sunroom with triple-pane Pella windows, a lower-level recreation area with a kitchenette, and a 9-by-40-foot heated pool accompanied by a cabana.

"The house wasn't maximized for its potential. It had a three-car garage, but the foyer was cramped, the kitchen outdated and too much of the property was unused."

Altaf Lakhani stated:

This extensive renovation has significantly increased the property's value, reflecting the high-end nature of D.C.'s real estate market. The house is now listed for $6.675 million, a price that aligns with the luxury segment in one of America's most expensive housing markets.

The redesign caters to both family living and entertainment, with ample space for social gatherings. The property's location offers views of the Washington National Cathedral, the second-largest church building in the United States, adding to its appeal.

As Washington, D.C. maintains strict regulations for historic preservation, this renovation serves as an exemplary model of how to modernize a classic home while respecting its architectural heritage. The project demonstrates the potential of combining Tudor Revival aesthetics, which were popular from the 1890s to the 1940s, with contemporary design elements to create a unique and luxurious living space.
