FBI Reveals Extensive Planning in Trump Assassination Attempt

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has disclosed new details about the failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump that occurred just over a month ago. The incident, which took place on July 13, 2024, at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has prompted a thorough investigation into the gunman's motives and planning process.

Thomas Crooks, the 20-year-old assailant, conducted extensive research before targeting the Republican presidential candidate. FBI officials revealed that Crooks performed over 60 searches related to both Trump and his Democratic rival, President Joe Biden, in the months leading up to the attack.

Kevin Rojek, the FBI's top official in western Pennsylvania, stated that Crooks exhibited "a sustained, detailed effort to plan an attack on some events." The investigation uncovered that Crooks had been researching campaign events as early as September 2023, with a particular focus on western Pennsylvania locations beginning in April 2024.

The FBI's Cyber Division, which specializes in computer-related crimes and digital evidence, played a crucial role in uncovering Crooks' online activities. Their findings revealed that the gunman had also searched for information about both the Republican and Democratic national conventions, highlighting the breadth of his potential targets.

Despite the wealth of digital evidence, investigators have yet to determine a clear motive for the attack. Rojek noted that Crooks' computer activity showed interest in various ideologies, but did not definitively point to a particular political leaning.

The assassination attempt has raised significant concerns about security measures at political events. Several congressional and government probes are currently examining the incident, focusing on how Crooks managed to access a nearby building and fire eight shots at the former president before being neutralized by a Secret Service sharpshooter.

The FBI's investigation has also revealed that Crooks had been researching bomb components since 2019. Explosive devices were found in his car following the attack, underscoring the potential for even greater harm.
