Greek port workers stop ammo shipment to Israel in protest

About two years ago Greek port workers took a stand against the Gaza conflict. Dozens of union members stopped a container full of ammo (21 tons) from being loaded onto a ship at Piraeus port

The container‚ which came from North Macedonia was supposed to go to Israel on a Marshall Islands ship. The union had asked workers to stop any weapons or ammo from being sent that could be used in the Gaza war.

Its time to shout loudly that we wont allow Piraeus port to become a war springboard

Union statement on Facebook

People at the protest carried flares and spray-painted slogans on a truck saying “Murderers get out of the port“. This shows how strongly they felt about the issue.

Greeceʼs position on the conflict was complex. They said Israel could defend itself but also wanted the fighting to stop right away because of the “unimaginable humanitarian catastrophe“ (thats how they described it)

The truck with the ammo is now with port authorities‚ and theyre looking into what happened. They even want to arrest a union leader. But the container did have the right papers to go through Greece

The workers actions show how some people felt about the war and didnt want their country to be part of it – even if it meant going against the rules
