Luna and García Bernal Reunite for Hulu's Spanish Debut "La Máquina"

Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, renowned Mexican actors and longtime friends, have collaborated once again for Hulu's inaugural Spanish-language series, "La Máquina". This project marks their latest joint venture, following their acclaimed performances in "Y Tu Mamá También" (2001) and "Rudo y Cursi" (2008).

The series, which began streaming on Hulu approximately one year ago, explores the world of professional boxing. García Bernal portrays Esteban, a boxer facing retirement due to physical limitations despite his passion and knowledge of the sport. Luna takes on the role of Andy, Esteban's manager, who prioritizes success and financial gain above all else.

Their enduring friendship, which began in childhood when they met on a Mexican soap opera set, has been a cornerstone of their careers. Both actors have achieved international recognition, with Luna gaining fame for his role as Cassian Andor in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and the subsequent Disney+ series, while García Bernal earned a Golden Globe for his performance in "Mozart in the Jungle".

The duo's chemistry, both on and off-screen, has been a significant factor in their collaborations. Director Gabriel Ripstein noted the challenges this presented during filming, stating, "It became a challenge at certain points, where we had to hit the dramatic scenes and these guys would just go off. It was very contagious."

Luna and García Bernal have not only acted together but also co-founded the production company Canana Films in 2005. Their partnership extends beyond acting, as both have ventured into directing and producing. Luna directed the biopic "César Chávez" in 2014, while García Bernal has been involved in various independent cinema projects.

"There is that little moment of, well, this is crazy. Like ... who would have thought that we were ... riding on the bicycles together and all of a sudden we're doing this. It's crazy."

Gael García Bernal reflects on their journey

Their careers have been marked by a commitment to representing Latin American culture in global cinema. Both actors have worked in Hollywood and independent productions, showcasing their versatility in both Spanish and English-language roles. García Bernal's portrayal of Che Guevara in "The Motorcycle Diaries" (2004) and Luna's voice work in "The Book of Life" (2014) are testament to their range as performers.

As they continue to collaborate and push boundaries in the entertainment industry, Luna and García Bernal remain vocal advocates for Latin American representation in film and television. Their latest project, "La Máquina", not only showcases their acting prowess but also highlights the growing demand for diverse, multilingual content on streaming platforms.
