In a harrowing incident off the northern coast of Sicily, a 183-foot luxury yacht named Bayesian succumbed to a violent storm, resulting in a dramatic rescue operation. The vessel, owned by Mike Lynch, a British tech entrepreneur, encountered severe weather conditions approximately half a mile from Porticello, a quaint fishing village.
Charlotte Golunski, a guest aboard the yacht, recounted her terrifying experience to local media. She described the vessel's erratic movements in the turbulent sea, likening it to a dance. In a heart-stopping moment, Golunski momentarily lost grip of her 1-year-old daughter in the churning waters. "For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea," she told Giornale di Sicilia. "Then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves."
The incident unfolded around 4 a.m. on August 19, 2024, when the yacht began to list dangerously. Of the 22 individuals on board, 15 were successfully rescued. Tragically, the ship's chef was confirmed as the sole fatality. Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter, and several other passengers remain unaccounted for as search and rescue efforts continue.
Golunski, her partner James Emslie, and their daughter Sophie were among those rescued. They were transported to Di Cristina hospital in Palermo for medical attention. Hospital staff reported that both mother and child were in good condition. The head of the hospital, Domenico Cipolla, shared that the survivors' accounts deeply moved the medical personnel.
British oceanographer Simon Boxall provided insight into the treacherous nature of Mediterranean weather. He explained that conditions can rapidly deteriorate from calm to "horrendous" storms. "Some of the worst storms I have experienced have been in the Mediterranean," Boxall stated.
The search operation has expanded to include specialist cave divers exploring the sunken yacht. Boxall commented on the possibility of survivors trapped in air pockets, emphasizing the importance of a thorough search.
