Minneapolis Man Arrested for Threats Against Local Synagogue

In a recent incident that has raised concerns about religious safety, law enforcement in Minneapolis apprehended a 21-year-old individual for allegedly making threats against Temple Israel, one of North America's largest Reform congregations. The arrest occurred approximately one year and one day ago, on September 15, 2023, following a series of alarming events.

Temple Israel staff initially reported receiving threatening phone calls on September 11, 2023. The caller, using a voice-masking application, repeatedly warned of intentions to "shoot up" the synagogue. This technology, which cybersecurity experts caution can be misused, allowed the suspect to conceal their identity while making these alarming statements.

Three days later, on September 14, 2023, police officers assigned to provide additional security around the synagogue observed an armed individual near the premises. Although the suspect fled, authorities successfully made an arrest the following day. Notably, no firearm was recovered during the apprehension.

Brian O'Hara, Minneapolis Police Chief, addressed the situation, emphasizing the city's commitment to protecting its diverse religious communities. He stated, > "Everyone in Minneapolis has the right to feel safe in their communities, and we will ensure our Jewish neighbors are protected as they celebrate the holy days."

The timing of these threats was particularly concerning, coinciding with the approach of Jewish high holy days and the first anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel. This attack, which resulted in significant casualties, was described by O'Hara as the worst terrorist assault on the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
