Musk and X Seek Dismissal of Don Lemon's Lawsuit Over Canceled Partnership
Elon Musk and X request dismissal of Don Lemon's lawsuit, claiming unreasonable reliance on oral agreement. Lemon's lawyer asserts termination was due to Musk's dislike of interview questions.
Elon Musk and X, formerly known as Twitter, have filed a request to dismiss a lawsuit brought by former CNN anchor Don Lemon. The legal action stems from a canceled partnership on the social media platform, following a contentious interview between Lemon and Musk.
The dispute centers around an alleged oral agreement between Lemon and Musk. According to the filing in San Francisco federal court, Musk claims he did not act improperly by reportedly telling Lemon that a written contract was unnecessary for their multimillion-dollar partnership. Musk argues that it was unreasonable for Lemon to rely on such a vague statement for a significant business arrangement.
Musk attributes the partnership's collapse in March 2024 to Lemon's conduct during an interview, which covered topics such as content moderation, hate speech, and Musk's personal life. The billionaire entrepreneur, known for founding companies like SpaceX and Tesla, stated that he initially believed the partnership would be successful before the interview soured their relationship.
X, the platform at the center of this dispute, has also requested a dismissal. The company contends that while the breakdown of a high-profile business arrangement may cause disappointment, it does not provide grounds for legal action. X echoed Musk's sentiments regarding the nature of Lemon's interview.
"X's response confirms the company terminated its contract with Don after he asked interview questions that Musk didn't like. This comes after months of X courting Don relentlessly to boost their tanking ad sales. This filing is clearly about Musk's ego, not the facts. We look forward to our day in court."
The lawsuit seeks a minimum of $1.5 million in damages, plus a share of advertising revenue for the first year. The potential earnings could have amounted to millions more, based on Lemon's ability to attract followers and advertisers to X.
This legal battle unfolds against the backdrop of X's ongoing challenges with advertisers. Many companies have distanced themselves from the platform due to concerns about hate speech and misinformation, issues that have persisted since Musk's $44 billion acquisition in 2022.
Musk's legal team has also argued that the case should not be heard in California, citing his Texas residency and Lemon's New York domicile. They have suggested the possibility of moving the case to Texas.
Don Lemon, a veteran journalist with a career spanning over two decades, spent 17 years at CNN before his departure in April 2023. His tenure at the network ended following controversial on-air comments about women and then-Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, for which he later apologized.
This legal dispute highlights the complex intersection of media, technology, and personality in the modern digital landscape. As the case unfolds, it will likely draw attention to the challenges faced by social media platforms in balancing content moderation, free speech, and business partnerships.
