The Geilenkirchen Air Base, established in 1982, is a crucial NATO facility located in North Rhine-Westphalia. It serves as home to the E-3A Component, the alliance's only multinational flying unit, employing approximately 2,000 personnel from 15 NATO nations. The base operates a fleet of 14 Boeing E-3A aircraft, capable of detecting aircraft up to 400 km away.
While initial reports from German news agency dpa suggested a possible Russian act of sabotage, based on information from a foreign intelligence service, this claim remains unsubstantiated. A security source clarified that no drones were actually observed during the incident. A NATO spokesperson at Geilenkirchen emphasized that Russia was not explicitly mentioned in relation to the threat.
