Russian National in Florida Arrested for Illegal Tech Exports to Russia
A Russian man living in Florida faces charges for illegally exporting technology to Russia that could be used in drone production. The case highlights ongoing concerns about sensitive tech transfers amid global tensions.
On September 16, 2024, U.S. authorities apprehended a Russian national in Sarasota, Florida, on charges related to the illegal export of sensitive technology to Russia. Denis Postovoy, 44, is accused of smuggling, money laundering, and unlawfully exporting microelectronic components with potential military applications, particularly in drone production.
The arrest comes more than two years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in 2022. According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Postovoy allegedly procured and exported dual-use technology that could enhance Russia's military capabilities in its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves stated:
"According to the indictment, this defendant illegally exported dual-use technology to Russia that could bolster its capabilities to wage its unprovoked war against Ukraine."
The DOJ reports that Postovoy operated through a complex network of companies in Russia and Hong Kong to acquire components from U.S. distributors. To conceal the final destination of these shipments, he allegedly utilized intermediary locations, a common tactic in illicit trade operations.

The Russian embassy in the United States acknowledged awareness of Postovoy's detention via the Telegram messaging app. However, they stated that they had not received any official notification from local law enforcement agencies regarding the arrest.
