Trump claims IVF support, Harris calls comments "bizarre"

At a town hall event in Georgia‚ Donald Trump made some eye-catching statements about in vitro fertilization (IVF). The ex-president (who once needed Sen. Katie Boyd Britt to explain IVF to him) called himself the “father of IVF“ and said hed back the procedure if he wins another term

Iʼm the father of IVF‚ so I want to hear this question

Trump also gave a pat on the back to the “six Supreme Court justices“ - three of whom he put in place - for getting rid of Roe v. Wade about two years back

Kamala Harris the Vice President‚ wasnt impressed. She called Trumps words “quite bizarre‚“ pointing out his part in overturning Roe which opened the door for conservatives to try and limit IVF access. Gwen Walz wife of Harriss running mate‚ took a dig at Trump saying he was “more like the father of Georgiaʼs abortion bans“

The Trump team didnt answer right away when asked to comment‚ but spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told the media that his words were “made in jest“ and that he really backs wide access to fertility treatments

Since Roe got the boot Republicans have had a hard time dealing with baby-making issues. Last fall Senate Republicans said no to a bill that would have made it easier to get IVF. Democrats warned voters that Republicans might try to ban abortion everywhere and even non-abortion stuff like IVF could be at risk

In Alabama earlier this year‚ the states top court said frozen embryos are kids - this made it tough to get IVF there. The Republican-run state government had to quickly pass a law to protect people trying to use IVF

Trumpʼs been trying to soften the blow from Roe being overturned by saying he likes IVF. He even promised to make it free if he gets back to the White House (though he didnt say how). At the town hall‚ he said the Republican Party was “the party for IVF“ and that they like it more than the Democrats do

Harris hit back at Trump saying he should own up to the fact that “1 in 3 women in America lives in a Trump-abortion-ban state.“ She also pointed out how couples hoping to start a family have been let down and hurt because IVF treatments are now at risk

Trumps been reaching out to other groups too - he talked to Black journalists last summer and questioned Harrisʼs Black identity. This week‚ he tried to appeal to immigrants and Hispanics on Univision. Heʼs also planning rallies in places that usually vote blue like California Colorado and New York
