Ugandan Olympian Critically Burned in Alleged Domestic Attack
Ugandan marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegui suffered severe burns in a reported domestic incident. The Paris Olympian is in critical condition at a Kenyan hospital, with police investigating the attack involving her boyfriend.
Rebecca Cheptegui, a 33-year-old Ugandan marathon runner, is currently in critical condition following a severe burn incident. The athlete, who participated in the Paris Olympics just last month, is receiving treatment at a medical facility in Eldoret, Kenya.
According to local media reports, Cheptegui sustained burns covering over 75% of her body in an incident that occurred on September 1, 2024. The event, described by authorities as a domestic dispute, allegedly involved her boyfriend, identified as Daniel Ndiema Marangach.
Trans Nzoia county police commander Jeremiah Ole Kosiom informed The Star newspaper that Marangach also suffered burns during the incident. Law enforcement officials are currently conducting an investigation into the matter.
Cheptegui, who finished 44th in the Paris Olympics marathon, maintains a residence in Kenya for training purposes. This practice is common among East African athletes, with many Ugandan runners crossing the border to train in Kenya's high-altitude areas, particularly in the western region near Eldoret.
The incident has shed light on the global issue of domestic violence, which affects individuals regardless of their professional status or athletic achievements. It also underscores the severity of burn injuries, with medical experts noting that burns covering more than 50% of the body are considered life-threatening and often require specialized treatment in burn units.

The marathon event, which has been part of the Olympic program since 1896 for men and 1984 for women, featured a course that began at Hotel de Ville and concluded at Les Invalides, covering the standard distance of 42.195 kilometers.

Both Uganda and Kenya have strong traditions in long-distance running, with numerous Olympic medals won in these events.
