Ukraine's "Witches of Bucha": Women Join the Fight Against Russian Drones

In the suburbs of Kyiv, a group of determined women have taken on an unexpected role in Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression. Known as the "Witches of Bucha," these female volunteers have joined mobile air-defense units, dedicating their nights to protecting their communities from the constant threat of Russian drones.

Angelina, a 27-year-old doctor, is one of the many women who have answered the call to serve. Just six months ago, she and her friend Olena spotted a recruitment sign and didn't hesitate to join. Their decision was influenced by the horrific events that unfolded in Bucha during the Russian occupation in early 2022, when hundreds of civilians were massacred.

The training for these units is rigorous and comprehensive. Col. Andrii Velarty, the area's territorial defense commander, reports that at least 70 women have been recruited into the Bucha defense forces for anti-drone operations in recent months. This initiative is part of a nationwide effort to attract part-time female volunteers to local defense units.

"We train no less than men. My younger son always asks, 'Mom, do you carry a gun?' I say, 'Yes.' He asks, 'Do you shoot?' I say, 'Of course I do.'"

The women come from diverse backgrounds, ranging from stay-at-home mothers to medical professionals. Their ages span from 27 to 51, reflecting a broad cross-section of Ukrainian society united in their determination to protect their homeland.

The role of these volunteers is crucial. With tens of thousands of men reportedly being recruited monthly for frontline duties, women are stepping up to fill traditionally male roles across various sectors, including critical operations like anti-drone defense.

Calypso, the platoon commander, emphasizes the equality within the units: "From the moment we come to serve, sign a contract, we are no longer women, we are soldiers. We have to do our job, and men also understand this."

The dedication of these women is evident in their ability to balance their volunteer duties with their civilian lives. Angelina and Olena, both doctors, often transition directly from night shifts defending the skies to day shifts at the hospital's intensive care unit.

The threat these women face is real and constant. On July 31, 2024, Russia launched 89 Shahed drones, all of which were successfully destroyed. The "Witches of Bucha" played a significant role in this defense, demonstrating the effectiveness of their training and commitment.

As more women join the ranks of territorial defense forces, Ukraine's ability to protect its skies continues to strengthen. These brave volunteers are not just defending their country; they're safeguarding the peace and future of their families and communities.
