US and India discuss failed hit on Sikh leader in New York

US and Indian officials met yesterday to talk about a failed attempt to kill a Sikh separatist in New York (that happened about a year ago). A US State Department person said the meeting was good and theyʼre happy with how India is helping.

The US says Indian agents tried to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun‚ who is both American and Canadian in New York. Theyʼve charged an Indian guy who they say was working for someone in the Indian government‚ but they havent said who.

An Indian group looking into this met with US officials in Washington. The US wants India to check out what the Justice Department said about an Indian official planning the attack.

The State Department person told reporters‚ “They told us the person named in the Justice Department paper isnt working for the Indian government anymore“. He said the meeting was good and “Weʼre happy with their help. Its still going on“.

Weʼve received an update from them on the investigation that they have been conducting

This isnt the only time India has been said to go after Sikh separatists in other countries. Two days ago Canada kicked out some Indian diplomats‚ saying they were part of killing Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. India did the same to Canadian diplomats and says Canada is wrong.

The US says India isnt helping Canada. These problems are making things hard between India and the US and Canada. The West often sees India as important to balance out China
