US parties gear up for legal fights ahead of November election

As the US presidential election approaches Republicans and Democrats are getting ready for possible legal fights. Donald Trump whos still claiming he didnt lose in 2020‚ wants a win so big on Nov 5 its “too big to rig.“ He told supporters in Georgia‚ “We want a landslide we cant let anything happen.“

Both sides are preparing for a long fight over the results. There are already many lawsuits about voting rules (these could be used to challenge the results later). Most of these cases were started by Republicans and their friends – theyʼre about things like mail-in voting overseas ballots and non-citizens voting.

Trump whoʼs facing criminal charges for trying to change the 2020 results‚ hasnt said heʼll accept this years outcome. Democrats are worried that people who dont believe in elections (now in important jobs) might not agree with real results and cause more legal problems.

Michael Waldman from the Brennan Center said‚ “In 2020 the election deniers were improvisational... Now that same election denialist impulse is far more organized far more strategic and far better funded.“ But he thinks the election system is better prepared now.

Election lawsuits have gone up a lot since 2000. Derek Muller‚ a law professor said‚ “Its not even just the parties – its outside organizations and theyʼre fundraising on how theyʼre able to protect democracy how theyʼre able to preserve the integrity of the election whatever it might be.“ He doesnt think this will slow down soon.

There are about 180 voting cases already filed this year. This is way more than before – its almost three times as many as in 2000. Changes in how campaigns can raise money have made it easier to pay for these legal fights.

The Republican National Committee is getting ready with a big “election integrity program.“ They want 100‚000 volunteers and lawyers in important states. Claire Zunk from the RNC said theyʼre “prepared to litigate.“

A judge in Georgia just said some new election rules there are “illegal unconstitutional and void.“ Republicans are fighting this decision. Michael Whatley‚ the RNC Chair‚ called it “the very worst of judicial activism.“

Experts say thereʼs no real way for a county or state to refuse to certify election results but they might try. This could cause confusion and delays especially if the election is close
