Pope Expresses Closeness and Love for Victims of Attack in Central African Republic

Pope Francis on November 18, 2018, expressed his closeness and love for the victims of the massacre carried out earlier in the week in the Central African Republic.  The Holy Father’s comments came after praying the noonday Angelus with an audience estimated at 30,000 in St. Peter’s Square.

“With sorrow, I learned the news of the slaughter carried out two days ago in a camp of displaced people in the Central African Republic, in which two priests were also killed,” Francis said. “To these people, so dear to me, where I opened the first Holy Door of the Year of Mercy, I express all my closeness and love. We pray for the dead and wounded and for an end to all violence in that beloved country, which is in such need of peace. Let us pray together to Our Lady . . . [Hail Mary].”

“From what I have been told by my contacts, the Blue Helmets of MINUSCA did not defend the population from the rebels who committed the assault in Alindao. At the arrival of the guerrillas they went back to their base, leaving the population to their fate of death and destruction”, Fr. Amos Boubas, a Central African priest who is studying in Rome and who is in contact with his confreres in the Central African Republic, told Fides Agency, which reported on November 17, 2018.

“Mgr. Cyr-Nestor Yapaupa, Bishop of Alindao, is organizing the evacuation of the survivors in Bangui, the capital”.
The reason for the massacre appears to be revenge for the killing “of a Muslim” by anti-Balaka militias. “I think that behind this serious episode there are political reasons due to the fact that France presented a resolution to the UN Security Council to extend the mandate of MINUSCA for another year”, concludes the priest.
