Award-Winning Photojournalist Captures Deadpool's Comic-Con Moment

Chilean photographer Matías Delacroix discusses his candid shot of a Deadpool cosplayer at Comic-Con, highlighting his approach to capturing spontaneous moments in major events across Latin America.

Matías Delacroix, a Chilean photojournalist based in Panama City, has been documenting significant events across Latin America for The Associated Press since 2019. His portfolio includes coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic, the aftermath of Jovenel Moïse's assassination, and Pelé's funeral, among other notable occurrences.

Delacroix's recent work at a Comic-Con event showcases his talent for capturing everyday moments with a unique perspective. With the release of "Deadpool & Wolverine" in 2024, the photographer anticipated an abundance of Deadpool cosplayers at the convention.

"I'm always looking to capture everyday moments. It was just a matter of patience to find a moment that would grab the audience's attention and make it a standout feature in our photo report."

Delacroix explains his approach

The photographer's method involved discreetly following a Deadpool cosplayer for over 15 minutes, waiting for an unplanned moment to unfold. His patience paid off when he captured the cosplayer removing his mask, drinking water, and reorganizing his belongings.

Delacroix utilized his standard equipment for this shot: a Sony A1 camera with a 35mm f/1.4 lens. This combination allowed him to capture the scene with clarity and depth, showcasing the spontaneity of the moment.

The resulting photograph effectively portrays the duality of the Deadpool character, known for its irreverent and morally ambiguous personality. By capturing the cosplayer in an unguarded moment, Delacroix added an extra layer of authenticity and humor to the image, contrasting with the typical staged photos often seen at such events.

Delacroix's work exemplifies the evolution of photojournalism, which emerged as a distinct form of journalism in the 1920s. His ability to find compelling stories in everyday situations aligns with the Associated Press's long-standing tradition of excellence in journalism, dating back to its founding in 1846.

The photographer's coverage extends beyond pop culture events. He has documented crucial political moments, such as Javier Milei's election in Argentina and Nicolas Maduro's re-election in Venezuela. Additionally, Delacroix's lens has captured major sporting events like the 2023 Pan American Games, showcasing the diversity of his portfolio.

As Delacroix continues to document life across Latin America, his work serves as a testament to the power of visual storytelling in capturing the essence of both significant historical moments and the seemingly ordinary aspects of daily life.
