Sea Life Sydney Aquarium has announced the passing of Sphen, a gentoo penguin known for his same-sex partnership with Magic. Sphen, who was 11 years old, gained international recognition as part of a unique penguin couple that challenged traditional notions of animal relationships.
Sphen and Magic, now 8, first captured public attention in 2018 when they constructed a pebble nest together at the aquarium. This behavior is typical of gentoo penguins, who are known to use pebbles as gifts during courtship. The pair's relationship blossomed, leading to the successful adoption and raising of two chicks in 2018 and 2020.
The couple's story resonated far beyond the aquarium walls. Their union was celebrated with a float in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, incorporated into the New South Wales state education curriculum, and even discussed in the Netflix series "Atypical." Their relationship has also been documented in books and films, highlighting the diversity of animal behavior.
Gentoo penguins, the third-largest penguin species, are typically monogamous and often return to the same breeding site each year. In the wild, they inhabit the Antarctic Peninsula and sub-Antarctic islands, facing challenges such as climate change and overfishing. These penguins are remarkable swimmers, capable of diving up to 200 meters deep and reaching speeds of 36 km/h in water.
Richard Dilly, the aquarium's general manager, described Sphen as an "icon" whose unique relationship with Magic had a positive impact worldwide. He noted that their bond was exceptional even among gentoo penguins, as they remained close outside the breeding season.
The aquarium did not disclose the exact date or cause of Sphen's death. However, they mentioned that the average lifespan for gentoo penguins is 12 to 13 years, indicating that Sphen lived a full life.
In a poignant moment, animal carers allowed Magic to see Sphen's body, helping him understand the loss. Renee Howell, the aquarium supervisor, described an emotional scene where Magic began singing upon seeing Sphen, prompting other penguins to join in a chorus. This touching display showcased the strong bonds that exist within penguin communities.
"The moment we showed him (Magic) to Sphen, he started singing, and then the other penguins also joined in, singing with him. So it was very touching. I don't think there was a dry eye in the penguin exhibit in that moment."
Sphen and Magic's story has not only entertained but also educated the public about the diversity of animal behavior and the complexities of penguin social structures.
