A year ago President Joe Biden made his final turkey-pardon ceremony at the White House where he saved two white-feathered birds from becoming thanksgiving dinner (their names Peach and Blossom came from Delawares state flower)
The 41-lb Peach and 40-lb Blossom had quite different personalities; one dreamed of seeing northern lights while enjoying hot-dish and tater-tots‚ the other one loved cheese-curds and boxing matches. During the ceremony the birds made their presence known – gobbling loudly as Biden spoke to 2‚500 guests
This event marks the official start of the holiday season here in Washington. Itʼs been the honor of my life‚ I am forever thankful
The turkey-pardoning tradition started about 77 yrs ago during Harry Trumans presidency; however the first official pardon was given by George H.W Bush around 35 yrs ago
Later that day Biden and First Lady Jill visited Staten Island for a special “Friendsgiving“ with Coast Guard members. They put-on black aprons and helped serve roasted brussel-sprouts and butternut squash to hundreds of “Coasties“ and their families. The room was filled with childrens voices which made Jill Biden say “it sounds just like home“
- Coast Guardʼs recent hurricane rescue missions
- Response to Baltimore bridge incident
- Service to the country
Biden ended his visit with a joke saying heʼd been “fired“ and its time to “get the hell out of here“ because of road closures
