A Sydney man has been arrested for stealing $393,000 worth of limited-edition Bluey coins. The theft of 63,000 commemorative coins has impacted their availability to children and collectors.

In a recent development, Australian authorities have apprehended a Sydney man accused of pilfering over $393,000 worth of unreleased limited-edition coins featuring Bluey, the beloved animated character. The theft occurred in June 2024 from a warehouse in Sydney, with the coins being stolen from a truck.

Bluey, an Australian animated series created by Joe Brumm, has become a global phenomenon since its 2018 debut. The show, set in Brisbane, Queensland, follows the adventures of a 6-year-old blue heeler puppy and her family. Its popularity has soared, making it the second-most streamed show in the United States last year, surpassing established series like "Friends" and "Grey's Anatomy".

The New South Wales police launched an investigation, codenamed "Strike Force Bandit" - a clever nod to Bluey's father's name in the show. In August 2024, authorities recovered 189 coins and arrested a 47-year-old suspect, an employee of the warehouse. Detective Superintendent Joseph Doueihi stated that the majority of the 63,000 stolen coins remain unaccounted for and are believed to be in circulation.

The theft has had a significant impact on the community. Doueihi expressed concern that many children and collectors have been deprived of access to these special coins. The stolen items are reportedly being sold online at ten times their face value, mere hours after the theft.

The Royal Australian Mint first announced these commemorative coins in June 2024, dubbing them "Dollarbucks" - a term used by Bluey and her 4-year-old sister Bingo in the show. These colorful, legal tender coins were designed to capture the playful essence of the beloved TV series.

Bluey's popularity extends beyond coins, with the character making an appearance at the 2023 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The show has been exported to over 60 countries and has won numerous accolades, including an International Emmy Kids Award. Its 7-minute episodes, filled with Australian slang and cultural references, have been praised for their positive representation of modern parenting and fatherhood.

"Everyone's favourite blue heeler, Bluey, is about to feature on her own set of Dollarbucks coins. These colourful coins encapsulate the playful essence of the beloved TV series and are perfect for collectors and fans alike."

As the investigation continues, authorities are working diligently to recover the remaining coins and return them to circulation, ensuring that young fans and collectors can enjoy these unique Bluey mementos.
