The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has set-up an emergency gathering this thursday in The Hague (which happens to be its head-quarters)
The meeting comes right after President Bashar Assadʼs government lost power when anti-regime forces took control of Damascus last weekend. The take-over raised world-wide concerns about toxic materials stored in various locations
The OPCW sent out a quick-notice to Syrian officials earlier this week explaining their duties regarding dangerous substances: chlorine gas needs special attention. The organization made it clear that Syria must follow strict rules to:
- Keep all chemical weapons secure
- Make sure nothing gets lost or stolen
- Start getting rid of these materials
- Let inspectors check everything
The watchdog group wants fast action because the situation in Damascus seems un-stable‚ with new people in charge who might not know about all storage places for these dangerous items
