Romanian parties join forces to create unexpected pro-European alliance
Pro-European parties in Romania put aside differences to form new government. Traditional opponents unite in coalition leaving nationalist groups outside despite their electoral success
In a significant political shift Romanias main pro-European parties have agreed to establish a joint-government putting aside their long standing differences. The deal was struck in Bucharest after intense late-night talks
The Social Democratic Party (leftist-leaning group) which got most votes teamed up with their traditional rivals - the National Liberal Party; forming an un-expected alliance. Two other groups: the reform-minded Save Romania Union and the UDMR (representing Hungarian minority) joined the coalition too
This new power-sharing agreement effectively blocks far-right nationalist groups from government positions (even though they showed strong results in Dec 1st elections). The move demonstrates a clear pro-European direction for the country - something that wasnt guaranteed before the vote
The coalition partners‚ who were often at odds in past years decided to focus on shared goals: keeping Romania on its Western path working together on economic reforms and maintaining political stability. The agreement came as surprise to many political analysts who didnt expect such quick resolution between opposing sides
