Heavy rains and strong winds from cyclone Fengal caused wide-spread flooding in south India last weekend‚ while killing 19 people across two countries. The storm system moved through Tamil Nadu state and nearby Puducherry bringing record-breaking rainfall (the highest in three decades)
The city of Chennai faced serious problems when flood-waters filled its streets — airport officials had to stop all flights for safety reasons. Local rescue teams used boats to help people stuck in flooded areas; the situation got better by next morning when planes started flying again
The Indian Army stepped-in to help people in Puducherry where the cyclone hit hardest. In nearby Sri Lanka‚ the storm affected more than 138-thousand families and took 16 lives (making it one of the worst natural disasters in recent times)
