A sudden rain-storm turned south-eastern Spain into a water-filled disaster zone this week forcing emergency teams to work round-the-clock (the flooding started just two days ago)
The non-stop rain hit several regions including Valencia‚ Cuenca and Albacete making roads look like fast-moving rivers; the water level reached first-floor windows in many buildings and swept away lots of cars. A well-known bridge collapsed during the downpour which was caught on video by local residents
Emergency services got many help-calls from people stuck in their houses and vehicles: helicopters had to fly in dangerous conditions to save trapped citizens. The flood-waters damaged many access points and highways making rescue work extra hard
The latest count shows at least 51 people didnt survive the disaster; rescue teams are still looking for missing persons in flood-hit areas. Local authorities say its one of the worst water-related events in the regions history
