A US intelligence official, speaking anonymously, revealed that Iran is already attempting to influence the election. The country is employing fake online personas and troll farms to spread disinformation aimed at harming Donald Trump's chances of winning another term. This strategy is likely influenced by the Trump administration's 2018 withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which led to heightened tensions in the Middle East.

"The bad news ... is the power of AI, that its scale and speed can spread disinformation at an exponentially rapid rate."
Experts are particularly concerned about complex influence campaigns that could cast doubt on election results. The toxic political environment in the US provides more opportunities for foreign actors to exploit existing divisions.
