A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals a slight shift in the U.S. presidential race, with Kamala Harris edging ahead of Donald Trump following Joe Biden's decision to end his re-election campaign.
The survey, conducted on July 22-23, 2024, shows Harris leading Trump by 44% to 42%, a difference within the poll's 3-percentage-point margin of error. This comes after Biden's announcement on July 21 to withdraw from the race and endorse Harris.
The poll also assessed voters' perceptions of the candidates' mental sharpness. 56% of registered voters agreed that Harris, 59, was "mentally sharp and able to deal with challenges," compared to 49% for Trump, 78. Only 22% of voters held this view of Biden, 81, whose debate performance reportedly influenced his decision to end his campaign.

When including independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in a hypothetical ballot, Harris maintained her lead over Trump at 42% to 38%, with Kennedy garnering 8% support.
It's important to note that while national polls provide insights into voter preferences, the U.S. Electoral College system ultimately determines the outcome of presidential elections. Additionally, the race remains tight, with previous polls showing Trump and Harris either tied or separated by a single percentage point.
As the November 5, 2024 election approaches, candidates will likely intensify their campaigns in key battleground states. The age and perceived mental acuity of presidential candidates have become increasingly significant factors in recent U.S. elections, reflecting voters' concerns about leadership capabilities.
The poll surveyed 1,241 U.S. adults nationwide, including 1,018 registered voters, providing a snapshot of current public opinion in a rapidly evolving political landscape.
