Estonia's New PM Vows Unwavering Support for Ukraine and Economic Focus
Estonia's incoming Prime Minister Kirsten Michal pledges continued support for Ukraine and plans to boost defense spending. He also aims to address economic challenges and stalling growth in the Baltic nation.
Estonia's newly appointed Prime Minister, Kirsten Michal, has reaffirmed the country's steadfast support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. In a recent interview, Michal emphasized the continuity of Estonia's foreign policy stance, pledging to maintain the strong backing initiated by his predecessor, Kaja Kallas.
"We will support Ukraine until the victory of Ukraine in this war. We are in this for a long term, I hope our allies are too,"

The 49-year-old leader, who assumed office on July 23, 2024, outlined his government's commitment to bolstering Estonia's defense capabilities. "The message to our enemies is that Estonia is well-defended, we will increase our (defence) expenditure," Michal stated. This commitment aligns with Estonia's consistent adherence to NATO's guideline of spending at least 2% of GDP on defense since joining the alliance in 2004.
In a significant move, the Estonian government is considering raising approximately one billion euros for ammunition purchases, with plans to be finalized by September 2024. This initiative underscores Estonia's proactive approach to regional security, reflecting its strategic position as a NATO member sharing a border with Russia.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Ukraine's President, expressed gratitude for Estonia's ongoing support during a congratulatory call to Michal. The Estonian leader reaffirmed his country's backing for Ukraine's aspirations to join the EU and NATO, demonstrating Estonia's role as a strong advocate for Ukraine's integration into Western institutions.
While maintaining a robust foreign policy stance, Michal also faces domestic economic challenges. Estonia's export-driven economy has experienced about nine to ten quarters of GDP decline, impacted by weak demand in its main trading partners and a decline in its energy sector competitiveness. Addressing this economic stagnation is a key priority for the new government.
Michal, a member of the liberal Reform party since 1996, brings extensive political experience to his new role. His career includes leadership positions in various ministries, including Justice, Economy, and most recently, Climate. As Estonia continues to navigate complex geopolitical and economic landscapes, Michal's leadership will be crucial in maintaining the country's position as a key player in the Baltic region and a staunch ally within NATO and the EU.
Estonia, known for its advanced digital society and e-government services, has consistently punched above its weight in international affairs despite its relatively small population of 1.3 million. As the host of NATO's Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, Estonia continues to play a vital role in shaping the alliance's cybersecurity strategies.
With the next election scheduled for 2027, Michal and his government have a substantial timeframe to implement their policies and address the challenges facing this Baltic nation, which has become one of the most vocal critics of Russia and supporters of Ukraine within the EU and NATO since regaining its independence in 1991.
